Involving carefully phenotyped cohorts, applying a variety of biological samples,’omics’- technologies and methods of statistical genetics, we deliver novel insights into the genetic basis of normal and diseased human metabolism with the ultimate goal to explore the potentials of genomics-driven classification, prevention and treatment of metabolic dysfunctions.

Another major effort is centered on studies of the role of the gut and oral microbiotas in metabolic health and risk of metabolic disease. Here, our group performs interventions applying quantitative metagenomics to characterize changes of the human microbiome at levels of microbial genes, various taxa and derived functional potentials. Suspected human pathogenic microbiotas are studied mechanistically in animal models. Our goal is to define bacteria-based therapies to combat common metabolic diseases.
