Metabolic Microbiology

Led by Professor Fredrik Bäckhed, the group investigates the relationship between the gut microbiota and enteroendocrinology in metabolic diseases.

We exercise findings and know-how in metabolic receptology and enteroendocrinolgy to directly examine how GPCRs sense small metabolite ligands such as organic acids generated by the gut microbiota, and how this controls the enteroendocrine system and other metabolic systems of the body.

By using gnotobiotic mice, we clarify the interaction between the gut microbiota and the human host and develop new diagnostics and curative strategies to target metabolic diseases.
