Rodent Metabolic Phenotyping

The aim of Rodent Metabolic Phenotyping platform is to provide a facility with optimal conditions for in vivo metabolic research in rodents through the provision of expertise, equipment, and infrastructure.

Technology and competence

The platform has three independent metabolic phenotyping systems that allow continuous monitoring of energy expenditure, locomotion, and food and water intake. One of the indirect calorimetry systems is located in climate chambers allowing the manipulation of both lighting and temperature. Telemetric readers are installed under each cage for the purpose of monitoring physical activity as well as core or interscapular temperatures remotely.

Additionally, the platform has the capacity to do a battery of standard metabolic procedures, such as oral and intra-peritoneal glucose tolerance tests, insulin tolerance tests, and lipid tolerance tests. The platform has facilities to perform general surgery and microsurgical interventions in the vascular system and in the gastrointestinal tract, including gastric bypass, cannulation of bile duct, etc. The neurosurgical capacity includes stereotactic administration of genes, virus, or compounds into specific brain regions.

To complement this phenotyping set up, the platform has two housing incubators and a larger enclosed housing room, which can be set to different light and temperature conditions for longer-term perturbations/acclimations. The benefit of the enclosed climate room allows phenotyping procedures (e.g., glucose and insulin tolerance tests) at a particular temperature and light-dark pattern to avoid disrupting the mice.

Know-how, training and knowledge sharing

The Rodent Metabolic Phenotyping platform offers workshops organized as a PhD course to introduce students, working in the metabolic field, to the general methods applied in in vivo phenotyping of rodents. In addition, a series of very detailed standard procedures of operations (SOP) are formulated to introduce new scientist in the metabolic field to the basic methods used for in vivo characterization. The platform also participates in teaching master students in human biology.
