The Nordic Medical Prize is one of the largest awards for medical research in the Nordic countries, and since 1999 it has been awarded once a year to one or more researchers for their unique scientific work.

This year Professor and Executive Director of the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research Juleen R. Zierath receives the prize for her contribution to diabetes research. The prize comes with SKK 750,000. The second recipient this year is Patrick Rorsmann from the University of Gothenburg.

In their motivation for selecting the two recipients, the foundation awarding the prize writes: ’For their leading international research into diabetes that has produced extensive scientific knowledge of the fundamental mechanisms behind the development of diabetes, thus making it possible to develop new forms of treatment for this disease’.

And about Juleen R. Zierath specifically they argue that she was chosen ’for her translational studies of the cellular and molecular mechanisms behind the development of type 2 diabetes and for identifying the molecular mechanisms behind the positive effects of physical exercise on glucose metabolism in the skeletal muscles’.

The Nordic Medical Price will be awarded on Monday 28 January 2017 at Folksam on Bohusgatan in Stockholm.
